Preserving the Past for the Future

The Hills District Historical Society

The Hills District Historical Society was founded in 1967 by Councillor Fred Caterson and Bob Martin, who shared a deep passion for preserving the stories, sites, and legacy of The Hills Shire. From humble beginnings meeting at the Castle Hill RSL Hall, the Society has grown into a dedicated organisation that maintains an extensive collection of historical records, photographs, and artefacts representing the region’s rich history—from the Dharug-speaking people who first walked the ridgelines between the Parramatta and Hawkesbury Rivers, to early colonial farms, rebellion and industry, and the district’s transformation into the thriving suburban centre it is today.

Over the decades, the Society has operated a museum and research centre in several locations, including the Castle Hill RSL and the Castle Hill Showground. Today, the Historical Society is based at Building 10, Balcombe Heights Estate, where it continues its mission to protect and promote local heritage.

The Society is an active volunteer-run organisation that welcomes new members and visitors. Members attend monthly meetings with guest speakers, host heritage tours, and advocate for the protection of historic buildings and places in The Hills.

The Museum collection is curated by volunteers and made available for tours by appointment, including for schools and community groups. The Society also maintains a significant archival collection, including more than 5,000 catalogued photographs and a range of published resources, many of which are available for sale.

The Hills District Historical Society helps ensure that the unique identity and heritage of The Hills remains alive for future generations.
